Our Antiques & Collectables auction always draw huge interest due to the hugely varied range of items in all collecting fields, and to suit all pockets.
Starting off the auction today was the rare collection of 19th century Tunbridge ware, with such fine and varied examples it was no surprise that it drew in the collectors with fierce bidding over every piece.
Highlights were this early 19th century Georgian dome box, the lid depicting a view of Muckross Abbey which sold for £220,
and this exquisite watch stand, which sold for £110.
Rare and early was the watchword for this stunning paperweight, intricately blown with charming figural and decorative canes this mid 19th century weight is a rare example by one of the pioneers of the blossoming of millefiori paperweights, Pietro Biagalia, monogram signed and dated 1843 to one of the canes, it sold well over estimate for £1,000.
It is always worth keeping your eyes peeled for militaria at SARs, in a sale with a number of exciting militaria lots, this lot peeked the interest, including cap badges and an SAS cloth patch, it sold for £220.
Moving onto the selection of 19th century bronzes we had on offer, lot 116, a fabulous Charles Octave Levy French 19th century bronze figure of Salome, saw some fierce bidding via telephone and online bidders, taking the pre-sale estimate of £700-1000 to the fall of the gavel at £1,600 with auctioneer Sophie Chapman.
With fast and furious bidding from commission, internet and telephone in play, it was wonderful to see this stunning 19th century French bronze of Salome by Charles Octave Levy soar over its £700-£1,000 estimate to finally sell on the telephone for £1,600.
It was a smashing day for glass at SARs today with a stunning collection of the iconic Geoffrey Baxter for Whitefriars vases selling well over estimate for between £110 and £130 each. With the rare 19th century paperweight selling earlier in the sale for £1,000, the mood was set to be a day for paperweights, with Caithness limited edition examples all selling well over estimate with some keen bidding, taking this group of five weights to £220 (lot 221) swiftly followed by these two Caithness glass ink bottles which sold for £120 (lot 222):
Rare Royal Worcester and Coalport ladies were flying today at SARs. From a lovely private collection, it was fabulous to see this group of five Coalport fine bone china limited edition figurines (lot 237)
and a group of four Royal Worcester limited edition figurines (lot 250) both sell for £300.
This impressive painting by Von Breda is showstopping, with all the viewers commenting on its quality when visiting us on our viewing day, we hope it has returned to is ancestral home when the hammer came down at an impressive £2,600.
Above lot 299A: Carl Frederick Von Breda (1759-1818): portrait of Mrs R Bright and her son Richard Bright, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left, and insciption verso details the sitter: Mrs Richard Bright of Ham Green and Brockbury, Daugter of Benj. Heywood and her son Richard Bright, 125cm high, painted in the manner of Reynolds.
After lunch and with Sophie Chapman taking the lots from 300 onwards, the paintings continued to delight, from modern examples like lot 309 by Geoffrey Chatten and his Norfolk scene far exceeding the pre-auction estimate to reach £200:
