Flagship Jewellery, Silver & Designer Auction - 24th April 2024

Jessica Wall & Sophie Chapman take to the rostrum for our very popular Jewellery, Silver & Designer auction, which also includes a single owner collection of rare clocks today, and there were many highlights and impressive hammer prices that are worth talking about!

There has been a gentle rumour that pearls are making a comeback, and if the enthusiastic bidding at Stamford Auction Rooms this morning was anything to go by, Pearls Are Back, with this stunning string by the sought after designer Mikimoto with a pretty 9ct gold clasp, selling well over estimate for £900.  

The brilliant mastery of the Victorian goldsmith was exemplified by this stunning bracelet that sold at SARs this morning for a well over estimate £580.  With each ball intricately decorated with a flower finial to either end it was a piece for the connoisseurs of very finely worked jewellery, it was not surprising that there was bidding over all the platforms on the internet as well as numerous commission bids, with the internet buyer finally winning on the day.

A very intereresting and rare US Civil War gold sash buckle appealed to the American bidders online and on the telephone taking the hammer to £650, towards the higher end of the £500-800 pre-auction estimate.

Diamonds, Art Deco, Platinum and a top designer to boot, there are few things that make a jewellery lover's heart beat more, and when combined into a fabulous iconic metamorphic brooch, it is not surprising that this gorgeous piece sold for a hammer price of £1,700 at Stamford Auction Rooms this morning.

Danish designed silver and jewellery is ever popular, and whilst Georg Jensen might be the first designer to spring to mind, there are plenty of other Danish designers to create excitement in the saleroom! In this auction, lot number 70 was created by Hans Hansen of Denmark and we had a lovely reaction to his work by the bidders who flew by the £60-90 estimate to £280 when the gavel came down to a SAR LIVE! bidder.

In contrast to the modernist design of this ring, Lot 83 was a very pretty Art Nouveau 9ct gold and amethyst necklace, delicate in nature and very evocative of the period, and also a firm favourite of our Saleroom Assistant Marylyn Ratcliffe who was pleased to see it exceeding the estimate of £70-100 and selling for £180.

If football is your favourite sport, you may have been interested in lot100, an Arsenal Football Club insignia ring, which sold above estimate at £160 after much calamity in the saleroom with Jessica teasing the bidders that might not support the team - Sally, our saleroom manager being one of them!

Jessica's favourite lot of the auction was a beautiful opal necklace, elegantly set with graduated firey opals in scrollwork setting, and not surprisingly saw some very competative bidding, when a far surpassed estimate of £400-600 met an impressive final bid of £900.

Art Deco is certainly the jewellery to be collecting currently where even the paste is being fiercely sought after, including this stunning lot of green paste and marcasite set necklace and near matching earrings which sold well over estimate at £140, this group of blue paste set earrings which sold for £190 and this lovely and unusual paste metamorphic brooch with perfume vial held to the back which sold for £90.

Jet, usually associated with mourning is riding a real wave at the moment as this group of stunning Victorian and later jet proved today, selling well over the £50-£80 estimate for £320.

Described as the Cartier of our time, pieces by Joel Arthur Rosenthal are highly collectable and so the bidding proved today when this stunning lot of a pair of earrings, modelled as purple pansies and enamelled on aluminium came sold for £3,200.  With original pouch, packaging and including the tickets and catalogue for the exhibition at Somerset House where the vendor purchased them, they also came with the all important provenance.

It is certainly time to check out those forgotten corners of your wardrobe as vintage designer pieces are really beginning to soar again as this stunning Chanel jacket proved when it sold for £900.
